I live round the corner from the Metro supermarket at Rideau St in Ottawa, which is very convenient so I go there at least once a week.
Unfortunately several times I've bought "fresh" meat products from them only to discover they are quite rotten once you open them and look underneath (and smell them).
Yesterday I bought some New Zealand lamb chops which were "best before" a couple of days away and when I got home and took the cling-film off I discovered they were visibly green underneath and smelt quite putrid.
I threw them down the rubbish chute in quite a hurry and returned to the store the following day with my receipt, only to be told that they do not give refunds on fresh products unless you return with the actual product itself.
This isn't a very consumer friendly policy in the least as no one wants to carry around rotten meat but if you find you have purchased rotten meat from a Metro supermarket, put it in a plastic bag and freeze it as you will need to return it with your receipt in order to receive a refund.
I've also have purchased "fresh lean beef mince" from them and have had to throw my completed meal away as despite extensive cooking the smelly putrid flavour of the mince had permeated through everything.
I would recommend using a butcher if you care about quality or at least ensuring that the "best before" date has at least a week left on it, though this is no guarantee that their product isn't spoilt.
